Last week, on Nov. 19, members of the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB) took a critical first step in altering the language used to label those convicted of a sexual offense while in treatment towards a “person-first” perspective.
This effort was not without opposition.
The victim advocates and representatives from county prosecutors unsuccessfully attempted to table the vote and even accused members of the SOMB of not following protocols. Ultimately, the SOMB settled on the phrase, “adults who commit sexual offenses.”
This change does not go far enough.
In the words of one prosecutor who testified at the SOMB hearing, it was just a “longer way to say sex offender.” I agree. Furthermore, the phrase implies the SOMB clients are continuously committing offenses.
Yes it does definitely imply we’re continuing to offend which we’re not, but at the same time it also implies that this isn’t all that we are. And that we can still contribute to society. That’s just my take on it anyway.
I think it means that the Sex Offender Management Board is pandering to the Legal Industrial Complex.
If one calls me an “Adult who commits sexual offenses” in a forum or place where more than just me heard someone using the term then I’m slapping a defamation, false light, and slander lawsuit on the person who used the SOMB stupidly approved term in the vein of many $M.
I am no more an “Adult who commits sexual offenses” than the WI man is a racist when his recently decided case did not even involve one hint of racism when the facts are reviewed, just as the facts of incorrectly using the term against me show I am actively committing a sex offense under the definition of the law as I write this forum entry.
Sorry I haven’t been on here lately but I am just getting use to a new computer. This technology is a bit upsetting to all and its more of a head game in who’s talking to who or who’s taking advantage of others. Yes I had windows 7 and was very comfortable with it and it also had my graphics’ program on it that I use for graphic set ups.
I have to agree with Will Allen on many views about this registry and who’s trying to overcome others for some public safety factor that is shallow to and being taken avantaged of by law enforcement personal. Sure they say there is safety in numbers but this internet is a bit strange to catch a predator. I’m sure people that got hooked up in all this are not comfortable with this registry heck I’m not even comfortable with my new computer even if it’s faster or Windows 10.
Seems faster is better but in the long run who is catching who. If righteousness is doing what is right than what is justice. Is it doing something wrong to make it right? Sure I’m from the old school and I’m sure many are also. This computer …. Head game is some meatloaf type foreigner to many and I hope true justice is still true justice or what are we fighting for. Many times we don’t rethink or come to reasoning it’s as if faster is better but who is correcting in much of this bias of irrational justice
